Internet Resources

In researching your family history it is most likley you will turn to the Internet. This is the most accesssible family history resources available to anyone with access to the World Wide Web.  In addition to the geanealogy specific sites which combine information from many different sources.

Sites such as familysearch.org and ancestry.co.uk will help you to build your family tree by allowing to search for your ancestors and give you the option to add them to your family tree.  Many of these will charge you to access some of this information through a subscription service. Notably though, familysearch.org provides access to all of its information free of charge.

There are plenty of other websites and services on the Internet which will specialise in a particulr type of information. You can look for some of the most popular ones by visiting my Genealogy Resources page.

Publications

One of the downsides of so many websites with family history content being launched is that the printed word is becoming less popular. That said, there are still plenty of places to find printed books on the subject. Specialist bookshops often have website sales facilities and benefit from having a knowledgeable person available to answer questions about their books.  Larger websites such as Amazon and specifically book internet-only stores have a good range of titles.

Conversely, the interentand new technologues, has allowed organisations to digitise old books, magazines and directories.  Many of these will be searchable for little or no charge.
I have found Google Books and the University of Leicester Special Collections to by very useful in my own family history research.

Notes:
This list is far from exhaustive and I am sure you will find a whole bunch of other sites. Some mmight be more suited to your ancestors, their professions, etc.
