Grace’s Guide To British Industrial History
Grace’s Guide To British Industrial History
British Industrial History is an often forgotten source of genealogical information. You will find a surprising amount of information written and recorded around the time of the Industrial Revolution. Grace’s Guide to British Industrial History is a marvellous resource.
In their own words, Grace’s Guide describes itself as the leading source of historical information on industry and manufacturing in Britain. I discovered this site when a search for my relative came up with his name and added his occupation – engineer.
Clicking through to the result, I found his obituary, which gave me a lot of information I wasn’t aware of and confirmed many details I already had. Most interestingly, Grace’s Guide gave me the source of that information: the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. I now had somewhere else to look. I visited the IME website and discovered they held a searchable archive, and low and behold, there he was. The record showed me his proposal to become a member.
And that was not the end of my discoveries, because re-looking at Grace’s Guide I came across other names from my family tree. It was well worth a bit of legwork and perseverance.
Grace’s Guide is a registered charity for the advancement of education in the history of industry and engineering in the UK. Its database of over 165,000 pages and over 240,000 images is fully searchable.
